The award is recognition of B'Tselem's work over the past two decades in the West Bank and Gaza Strip to protect civilians in times of armed conflict, document violations of human rights and international humanitarian law, ensure accountability for victims of illegal behavior by security forces and to promote respect for the human rights of Israelis and Palestinians alike.
AOAV works locally and globally to reduce – and ultimately prevent – armed violence. It was founded in 1992 as the UK arm of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) and has played a leading role in a number of important international treaties to ban landmines and cluster munitions and restrict other weapons.
