B'Tselem - The Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories

Dear Friends,

2014 was a terrible year – one of the cruelest, and deadliest, in the history of the occupation. Thousands were killed in Gaza and dozens in Israel, to say nothing of the wounded and the extensive devastation. It will take years to rebuild the thousands of homes that have been ruined, but how long will it take people to mend and rebuild their ruined lives? Each family has to face its own individual suffering and each person has an individual capacity to endure. Of all the blessings that may as 2014 comes to a close, the one said on the Jewish New Year seems most fitting: May the end of the old year end its calamities.

After so much killing, destruction, and suffering, wanting to “get back to normal” is a basic human instinct. It is tempting to leave the horrors behind and move on. Israeli politicians campaigning reveal their priorities. Is Israel’s upcoming general election about four more years of “normal” or is it about Gaza?

We must not get back to normal. That “normal” is morally reprehensible. It is deadly, guaranteeing the very opposite of peace and justice. For the millions of Palestinians living under occupation, that “normal” means living a practically defenseless existence in the face of a constant threat of harm. Human rights violations must never become the norm – not after 47 years, not after one hundred.

This is the very eventuality B’Tselem is here to prevent, and is the very reason we need your support. Throughout this terrible year, B’Tselem maintained its integrity and remained steadfast in its commitment to human rights work in the face of extraordinary challenges, running the gamut from Bitunya to Gaza, from Hebron to Rafah. Every person killed, every checkpoint, every new act of expropriation adds another brushstroke to the portrait of the mechanism that has been in place for almost half a century, intent on dispossessing people and taking over their land. B’Tselem portrays and interprets this reality, galvanizing people to protest this injustice.

Your support will enable B’Tselem to carry on its work in 2015, enabling us to bring unknown information to the public, to document and protest. Please, donate generously now. A simple, secure online donation option is available.

With deep thanks on behalf of everyone at B’Tselem,

Hagai El-Ad
Executive Director
